The CAG Executive and University of Victoria Local Organizing Committee (LOC) must unfortunately cancel the CAG 2020 Conference, scheduled for May 25-28, 2020 in Victoria BC.

This event was planned to be a large public gathering in an indoor setting with international attendees. Gatherings of this nature run counter to evidence-based policies to reduce the transmission of the novel coronavirus, the virus that causes COVID-19.

We evaluated information carefully from the federal and BC provincial governments, as well as liaised with UVic’s COVID-19 response team. As we made our decision, the Provincial Health Officer of BC has recommended all gatherings over 250 people should be cancelled.

We also referred to our set of conference values, which reminded us of our responsibility to provide a safe and inclusive venue for all attendees. Living up to this vision will likely not be possible.

Moreover, we reason that we have a responsibility not only to act cautiously, considering the risks to human health, but also to act early and decisively so that attendees who have not yet made travel plans can avoid the challenges and penalties of later cancellation.

Finally, we also believe it is our professional and personal responsibility to participate in global efforts to reduce harm to society’s most vulnerable people.

The registration fees you have paid will be refunded in full.
